What Not To Say During An Interview

Got a job interview coming up soon? Well, here’s five tips on things not to say during you job interview that will give you a competitive edge.

  1. Rule number one: Don’t Talk Bad About Your Company! Seriously, not even a little bit! No matter how the conversation comes up because no one needs to hear about how you didn’t like working there. That includes talking badly about the people because it only leads to the boss thinking if you feel that strongly you’ll probably feel that way about this job too!

2. Rule number two: Don’t Be Desperate! Though we understand, you need the job, but you should never go into your interviews with a “I’ll do anything” type of mindset because those are people who are most likely unemployed. Displaying this level of desperation doesn’t come out very well. Instead go into you interview and talk about what you can do and the value you can bring and that you are excited to do.

3. Rule number three: Don’t Tell Them That You’re a Self-Starter or That You’re a Quick Learner! Though it’s a great quality to be a fast learner and self-sufficient, do not tell them this information. What I would recommend is that you put that information into context for them. Depending on the position, you can phrase your job in management as a leader, someone that led people. Go into details of how you did it.

4. Rule number four: Don’t Say You Don’t Know How to Do Something! Everyone doesn’t know everything, but when it comes to interviewing for a certain position that requires a certain level of information, you should not confirm that you don’t know the information even if its true. What you could do is ask for a second to think about it and then connect it to something similar that you’ve done. This allows you to look like you have some level of understanding.

Finally…

5. Rule number five: Don’t Ask What the Company Does! This can be the worst thing you can do. It shows that you did absolutely no research or preparation on this company, division, or projects that they are working on. You should already know what the company does, if anything you should as them specifics about some of the things that they are doing. Gather as much information as you can so that you can go in there and now you can ask them questions that will help you qualify for the job.
