(April 2021, MyLucyZ Beauty Supply Store Grand Opening!)
They say you never miss a good thing until it's gone, and as of April 30th, 2026, the community of North Charleston either has already felt it or will begin to feel it very soon. After five years of business, the once hidden gem of the North Charleston area, MyLucyZ Beauty Supply store, officially closed its physical doors for good.
Owner, Myra Wright
Myra Wright, owner of MyLucyZ started out selling products online but was encouraged to open her own storefront as it was lacking in the community. "Beauty Supply Stores are considered staples in our communities, but we often never see anyone that looks like us running them," said Wright. Wanting her store to be more than just a store, she crafted the vision of her store to be a loving environment as well as a safe place for all women, but specifically black women.
Though she could see the vision clearly and knew it was needed in the community, she began to come up against major roadblocks in her journey. Despite facing discriminatory practices from vendors who typically sell to Chinese or Korean owners, Wright pushed through this roadblock that tried to stop her. Even having a representative from a popular brand investigate her store and location, stating to Wright, "We were shocked! You don't talk black!", thinking to herself "what does back sound like? Ghetto? No education? It was truly disheartening." Online data says
that black consumers spend approximately
$9.4 billion on beauty products, but with stores like MyLucyz being blocked at every
turn it’s hard to get a portion of that revenue in sale when it’s impossible to get the products
in the store to sell at all.
Getting to the
moment Wright had been working so hard for was finally here! Wright was optimistic and
eager to serve her community, but over time, the community was nowhere to be found. Things were
not going the way Wright had envisioned things to be. Unable to keep up with the demand
of popular products that customers were seeking, Wright began to worry about the longevity
of MyLucyz as customers would whisper, “Let’s just go to Hair Depot.” Though disappointed,
Wright said, “I only wished they knew what I went through just to get here, but I can’t
compete…I can only run my own race.” And run her own race she has done indeed! Customer Trellany
Simmons said, “I wish I could support her business more at times, so I try to buy something, but
ultimately, she doesn’t always have what I need, which forces me to go to other stores in
the area.” To keep MyLucyz visible, the windows were dressed up with hair models, flags that
read “beauty supply” were placed outside to attract new customers, and a content creator
was hired to create eye-catching marketing.
Wright has now sucessfully ran MyLucyZ beauty supply store for five years and came to the hard decision to physically close her store. Doing everything to keep her store in the forefront of people's minds as well as trending social media trends, some people just don't recognize a good thing until its gone. Though she only closed her physical doors to sell all of her products online, MyLucyZ Beauty Supply Store simply deserved more! As a loyal customer, I found myself looking for a new store to grab quick products from and recognized a few other customers who needed products as well in another location.
So here are my flowers to you! THANK YOU, MRS. MYRA! MyLucyZ Beauty Supply was everything this community needed and more and despite how things may have seemed it was needed. Know that you are loved and appreciated for all that you've done and sacrificed for your community. If you need an online store to shop with for specific products you can't find in store, MyLucyz Beauty Supply Store is your one-stop shop that will supply you with what you need.
