What’s
Up SC State, it’s your girl Sincerely, Aneace Janel and were back with another
episode of Campus Connection. Today we sat down with Dr. Demi T. Washington, Professor
of English and Communication here at SC State. We got to dig a bit of his
background, his thoughts on cultural differences, and where he sees himself in
the future.
Take A Listen!
SOT: Dr. Demi Washington:
In: "3 masters.."
Out: "Well the goal..."
Time: 5:00
As a graduate of Denmark Olar High School from Denmark, SC
Dr. Demi Washington went on through life over several years obtaining a total
number of 3 master’s degrees, 1 PhD, 1 bachelor’s degree, and currently working
on completing his EDD (Doctor of Education). After some extenuating
circumstances, Washington joined SC State University in 2020 as an adjunct
instructor in the Department of English and Communication. He is now working as
a full time Instructor teaching four courses from a pool of courses in both the
journalism and broadcasting concentrations.
Many Degrees
In the pursuit of obtaining his degrees, Dr. Washington
attended many colleges including well known HBCUs like Morehouse, Savannah
State Univ, Norfolk State and finally Jackson State University but his most
proud degree would come from Northwestern where he obtained his Masters. Though
he was surrounded by students that attended well known PWIs like Purdue, Drake,
and NYU, Dr Washington credits Jackson State University for being apart of his
learning that set him up for a major success.
Cultural Differences
Though HBCUs have been part of Dr. Washington’s foundation
for obtaining his number or degrees, he insists there is no slight towards HBCUs but does not see himself at State in the near future. Wanting to live in more of a “melting
pot” environment, Washington insist on only giving Orangeburg/SCSU another three more years of teaching before moving on. Dr Washington’s future goal is to be the VPAA of a PWI like Virginia Tech, Loyola in Illinois Chicago, Florida State, or the
University of Michigan.
Moving On
